*This is a legacy episode from the earlier version of this show called "Unleash Your Soul Song" with Becki Fleischer.
I can’t wait for you to hear my conversation with mega-hit songwriter, producer, and publisher, Jeff Cohen. By age 29 he had worked his way up to be the Senior Director of BMI (a music rights management company) finding, signing, and working with artists like the Spin Doctors, Lisa Loeb, Blues Traveler, Ben Folds, and Jeff Buckley. By all measures, he “made it” in the music industry and was making the kind of money that most people wouldn’t dare to jeopardize. He loved what he was doing and was perfectly happy but felt pulled to something more, something different. So, in his 30’s, he left it all with no intention of going back to chase down his dream of being a songwriter, a move that a lot of people didn’t understand. You’d expect that with his experience in the music industry the transition would be easy, but for many reasons, it turned out to be a detriment. With extraordinary humility and inspiring perspectives, Jeff shows us how you can pull on the threads of curiosity and interest from your childhood and weave them into a career – how self-awareness and integrity are some of the best supports you could have in chasing down your dream – and how to keep going when you reestablish yourself outside of what people know you for, what they expect of you, or want for you. This conversation is SO VALUABLE to hear as we navigate our own path. But that’s not surprising - who better than a master songwriter to help us unleash our soul song? xoB
